How to Care for the Plant

Water

They tolerate drought conditions once established

Pruning

Cut back after flowering for a second flush of flowers. Deadhead to prevent self-seeding.

Sunlight

Full Sun.

Soil

Well-drained soils are sandy and loamy soils (most average garden soil). Poor-draining soil is clay. Echinops prefers poor soils to rich ones and will tolerate drought conditions. It can handle strongly acidic soils (5.1 - 6.0 pH) but won't perform as well in basic soils (above 7.0 pH).

Temperature

Echinops should be displayed in a cool, below 70° F (21°C), location. Optimum conditions may be difficult to maintain, especially if plants are displayed outside.
