What is the plant

If only our bad hair days looked as good as Bad Hair Day Mangave! Like a head of hair, this fun, cooky plant produces narrow, flat lime green leaves that form an arching habit. Its leaf blades have light blush red spotting with a distinct blush toward the tips of the leaves. It looks like it was created for decorative containers, especially face planters. Mangave is a relatively new phenomenon, an intergeneric cross of Manfreda (Century Plant) x Agave. These rare hybrids combine the best of both worlds: the better growth rate and the interesting patterns of Manfreda, and the habit and refinement of Agave. They make fun, interesting, and long lived houseplants.

How to Care for the Plant

  • Water

Mangave can handle a bit more regular watering without being at risk of rot, especially when they are establishing roots. If left dry too long, they can go dormant, so aim to water deeply when the soil is dry.

  • Sunlight

Mangave can tolerate partial shade, but the more sun they get, the more colorful their speckles will be. Protect from afternoon sun when temperatures exceed 85F.

  • Soil

Aim to use a gritty, well-draining cactus/succulent soil or amend your soil with 50% mineral grit e.g. coarse sand, perlite, or pumice. Mangave are not heavy feeders and can thrive even in lean, nutrient poor soil.
