Gardenias are tropical broadleaf evergreens, usually grown as large indoor potted specimens for the sake of their spectacular scented white flowers. The gardenia is a beloved plant for the very simple reason that few natural scents are as remarkable, evocative, and memorable. If not for this spectacular appeal, few gardeners would try to grow high-maintenance gardenias, which are vulnerable to many insects and diseases. They are most commonly found in conservatories and greenhouses. Nevertheless, even a few months with a blooming gardenia in the house makes them a worthwhile addition to your collection.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
Plants that get direct sun all day might require more water. with all these variables, there's no set schedule for watering them. Water as needed. Be sure to water well in summer months but at the same time don't let autumn and winter rainwater log the plants.
Pruning
Clip or pinch off dead leaves and stems. If stems have rotted at the root, pull them out, and make sure to let the soil dry out before the plant's next watering.
Fertilizer
Use a fertilizer formulated specifically for your plant. Avoid over-fertilizing and follow the instruction on the label.
Sunlight
All plants require light for photosynthesis, the process within a plant that converts light, oxygen and water into carbohydrates (energy). Plants require this energy in order to grow, bloom and produce seed. Without adequate light, carbohydrates cannot be manufactured, the energy reserves are depleted and plants die. They need 12-14 hours of indirect sunlight.
Soil
Planting instructions will suggest planting in a sterile potting mix.
Temperature
Gardenias require temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid cold drafts if the temperature drops lower.
Container
Choose a pot with drainage holes, which also ensures potting soil doesn't stay too wet after watering your houseplants. The excess can freely escape out the bottom of the container, allowing oxygen to make its way to plant roots.
