What is the plant

A miniature version of florist's cyclamen, mini cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum) blooms generously, displaying tiny, pink, red or white blooms and heart-shaped leaves on 6-inch stems. A favored gift for Christmas and Valentine's Day, mini cyclamen is a tender plant that doesn't tolerate frost. However, it is suitable for growing outdoors in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11. Although this graceful little plant is often discarded once the blooms fade, it may rebloom after a period of dormancy.

How to Care for the Plant

  • Water

    Water

To keep your miniature from rotting, water it by soaking it from the base, only when the soil is feeling dry. Let the water drain thoroughly from the pot and keep the pot on some moist gravel in a tray to increase the humidity around the plant. Do not overwater! This is the cause of most cyclamen problems. If your plant turns yellow and droops, check that the soil is not too wet. Try moving the plant to a brighter, more humid location.

  • Fertilizer

Fertilize mini cyclamen regularly beginning when you've had the plant for about a month. The plant is fertilized when it comes from the florist, and too much fertilizer results in lush growth and no blooms.

  • Sunlight

Mini cyclamen benefits from bright, indirect light and performs well in a sunny window during winter and spring. However, avoid south-facing windows, which may be too intense.

Sandy to clay soils are acceptable but should be well draining and loose with grit, compost or mulch. Wet and soggy soils with poor drainage will cause tubers to rot.
