This hardy decorative houseplant, formerly called a pleomele reflexa, is native to Madigascar, Mauritius, and other islands of the Indian Ocean. These plants are considered to be slightly poisonous, especially to dogs and cats.
The dracaena reflexa, Song of India, has yellow stripes on short, narrow, pointed green leaves that are spirally arranged on the stem and tufted at the branch ends. This is a slow growing plant that can be used as a table plant, bush, or short tree.
Song of india plant doesn't like waterlogged soil. Therefore, always let a topcoat of a soil to dry out before you water a plant. A best method to check whether a soil is dry enough is to place a finger in a soil and see how deep a dry layer goes.
The ideal blend of soil for plant growth is called loam. Often referred to as topsoil or black dirt by landscape companies, loam is a mixture of sand, clay, and silt.
When it comes to fertilizers, you want to avoid over-fertilizing (just like an overdose of vitamins isn't great for us, either). Less is more, so it’s important to follow what the package says for application amounts.
Get rid of damaged leaves and stems. This is important because damaged leaves and stems can actually be an energy drain on your plant. By removing those dead parts, you're taking some of that work off your plant’s plate and allowing it to divert its energy into healthy leaves and new growth!
65°F (18.3°C) - 85°F (29.4°C). Temperatures below 55°F (12.8°C) can damage the leaves. Avoid cold drafts and heaters.
