How to Care for the Plant
Water
Philodendron tortum needs watering every time the top two inches (5cm) of soil become dry, usually about once a week. Maintain average household humidity levels above 40% and ensure there's no water accumulation in the draining tray.
Pruning
Prune your Philodendron in early spring to maintain a well-looking appearance, especially if the leaves become too crowded.
Fertilizer
Use a balanced liquid fertilizer for foliage plants during the growing season. Be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to yellowing leaves and root burn. Follow the instructions on the package; it is best to dilute it to about half the strength.
Sunlight
Provide your Philodendron Tortum with bright, indirect light, with a preference for morning sun. If you don't have a spot with sufficient light, consider using full-spectrum grow lights. Avoid excessive direct sunlight or afternoon sun, as it can lead to discolored, faded, or scorched leaves.
Soil
To thrive, Philodendron tortum requires a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter, including perlite, vermiculite, coconut coir, and preferably pine bark chips. Using a moss pole can help promote the growth of larger leaves.
Propagation
Cut a healthy stem with 2-3 leaves using sterilized shears. Place the cutting in room-temperature water in a spot with bright indirect light, and refresh the water every 2-3 days. When you see the roots reach about 2 inches (5cm) in length, transplant the cutting into well-draining, moist soil.
Temperature
Maintain a warm environment for Philodendron tortum by keeping indoor temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27˚C). Avoid exposure to cold drafts and be careful with air conditioning in summer to avoid wilting, yellowing, or curling.
Container
Choose a pot with at least one bottom hole. You may use any type of container that is 1 inch (3cm) bigger than the plant's rootball.
Fun fact
Fernleaf Philodendron is a true tree hugger in its natural habitat. It clings to tall trees and climbs on them.
