Often the names of plants surprise us. Reasons for them are different — from outward resemblance to ancient legends about plant names (by the way, you will find articles with legends in our blog). This time we made a selection of plants with animal names: some of them can boast of extraordinary looks as well.
Kangaroo Paw
Kangaroo Paw, also called Anigozantos, is an evergreen shrub with unusual flowers that visually resemble kangaroo paws. Not surprisingly, people have such associations because of the homeland of this plant — Australia.
Bird flower
We were shocked to see what this plant looked like! It is very similar to a tiny green hummingbird that flew up to the stem. Nature is capable of doing incredible things. Bird flower is common in dunes. The inhabitants of these lands used it in folk medicine.
Zebra Plant
Zebra Plant is a popular houseplant native to Brazil. Its large dark green foliage is decorated with white streaks, reminiscent of a zebra print. In addition, it blooms with golden-yellow flowers of exciting shape.
Pony Tail
Exotic Bokarneya received two animal names for its appearance: Elephant Paw or Pony Tail. It depends on the pile of vision: its bulb, which swells and expands near the ground, resembles a heavy paw of an elephant (and can reach the same size in the wild). At the same time, rosettes with leaves look like a horse’s tail. The plant is quite unpretentious in care, so you can try to grow it at home.
Monkey Monstera
All monsteras are now megapopular. This species is notable in that it is smaller than the classic monstera deliciosa. Unlike its famous cousin, its holes in the leaves do not cut the leaf to the end. Did you know that these holes in monstera foliage have a purpose? They help plants withstand heavy tropical rains because these beauties come from the wild jungles.
Bird of Paradise
Another exotic creature on our list comes from the gardens of paradise. This flower is also called Strelitzia and has another common name — a bird. Its bright petals open like wings. It is said that the Bird of Paradise symbolizes freedom and fidelity.
Rabbit-Shaped Succulent
Rabbit-Shaped Plant definitely gets a special award for its sweetness. This succulent looks like a favorite plant of a fairy from a cartoon. Its little stems look just like fluffy bunny ears. It has become popular in Japan, but we think the whole world will soon know about it. What a cutie!
Unicorn plant
It’s funny, but next to the fairytale’s name Unicorn Plant, it is also called Devil’s Claw. And all because its fruits are elongated and look like horns. These are boxes for seeds that can be eaten! Are you on the unicorn or devil side?
While preparing this selection, we discovered new plants that surprise even the most experienced green thumbs. Well, nature is magical. If you want a zoo and a garden at the same time, now you know what to get next!
