Curly Weeping Fig Care
Ficus benjamina 'Pandora'

Ficus benjamina, commonly known as weeping fig, benjamin fig or ficus tree, and often sold in stores as just ficus, is a species of flowering plant in the family Moraceae, native to Asia and Australia. It is the official tree of Bangkok. Ficus benjamina is a tree reaching 30 m (98 ft) tall in natural conditions, with gracefully drooping branchlets and glossy leaves 6–13 cm (2–5 in), oval with an acuminate tip. The bark is light gray and smooth. The bark of young branches is brownish. The widely spread, highly branching tree top often covers a diameter of 10 meters. It is a relatively small-leaved fig. The changeable leaves are simple, entire and stalked. The petiole is 1 to 2.5 cm long. The young foliage is light green and slightly wavy, the older leaves are green and smooth.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
When your weeping fig is actively growing, producing new leaves and twigs, water it regularly so that the soil remains moist. However, don’t allow the plant to sit in water. After watering, place the pot in a place that allows it to drain freely until no more water drips from it. When growth slows down or stops in fall and winter, reduce the frequency of watering. Wait until the soil has dried out to a depth of 1/2 to 1 inch before adding water, and allow the pot to drain thoroughly before returning it to its saucer. When new growth appears in the spring, increase the water. Water newly planted trees every day for the first two weeks, every two to three days for the next 10 weeks, and every week afterward until the tree is established. Spray the water over the root area of the tree.
Fertilizer
A weeping fig houseplant requires fertilizer every one to two months while it’s actively growing. A liquid fertilizer that contains a roughly equal balance of the major plant nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, gives the best results. Dilute the fertilizer according to the package instructions and apply it in place of water at the same time as when you would usually water the weeping fig. Don’t apply fertilizer if the potting soil has dried out, however.
Sunlight
Provide a bright spot out of direct sunlight if it’s indoors.
Soil
A ficus needs well-draining, fertile soil. Soil-based potting mixes should work well for this plant.
Temperature
The ideal temperature range for this plant is 65 to 70°F at night and 75 to 85°F during the day.
Container
Use a container with enough drainage holes.
