What is the plant

Endless Summer Hydrangea has been cultivated through a collaboration between Bailey Nurseries and woody plant expert Michael Dirr. What makes this plant unique is the ability to rebloom on last year's stems. The shrub is winter-hardy and boasts an extended blooming season, which makes it a perfect choice to make up your garden or balcony.

The Original Bigleaf Hydrangea has blue or soft pink flowers, depending on soil pH, and thrives in Zones 4-9. This hardy shrub offers season-long color (up to 12 weeks). It blooms with eight-inch (20cm) mop-head flowers held by sturdy stems. The dark green leaves provide the perfect backdrop for the beautiful flowers.

How to Care for the Plant

  • Water

    Water

When having potted Endless Summer Hydrangeas, maintain consistently moist soil during the growing season while avoiding waterlogging. Water deeply, ideally in the morning, to allow the plant to absorb it before it's too hot. Ensure water runs freely through the bottom holes to prevent root rot. Check that the top inches of soil are dry before giving your Hydrangea a drink.

  • Pruning

    Pruning

    plus open button

You'll need to prune your Endless Summer Hydrangeas in early spring and remove only dried-out brown buds higher up on the stems, leaving the green buds. Remember never to prune in the fall, as it could lead to the loss of future blooms. Also, cut away dead or damaged wood and eliminate weak or crossing branches. Make your cuts just above healthy buds or lateral branches at a 45-degree angle.

  • Fertilizer

    Fertilizer

    plus open button

For healthy Hydrangeas and rich bloom, it's recommended to apply one cup of granular fertilizer in spring or early summer. However, excessive fertilization should be avoided, as it can harm the root system and hinder blooming. The best option is slow-released fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 10-30-10 or, if unavailable, choose a fertilizer with a higher phosphorus (P) content to encourage blooming while avoiding those with excessive nitrogen (N) to prevent excessive foliage growth at the expense of blooms.

Endless Summer Hydrangeas thrive in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic and evenly moist. The bloom color is determined by soil pH and aluminum content, as in most Hydrangeas species. At pH below 6.0, the color of the flowers will be blue, and at pH above 6.0, Hydrangea blooms will be pink. Keep in mind that changes in soil pH may not show immediate results and may take a season or two to take effect fully.
