A Kalanchoe plant, native to Madagascar, is an easy-care, flowering succulent plant that does extremely well indoors. A relative of the jade plant, kalanchoes are short, bushy, upright plants with thick, oval-shaped scalloped leaves. A kalanchoe’s long-lasting star-like blooms appear in clusters at the ends of sturdy stems.

How to Care for the Plant

Water

The best rule of thumb for watering a kalanchoe is to stick your finger in the soil every few days. When the top 2 inches of soil is dry (all the way dry, not just sort of dry), it's time to water. Indoors, this will probably mean you'll only need to water every 2 or 3 weeks, but be sure to check regularly.

Fertilizer

Kalanchoe are self-sufficient plants, but they do benefit from occasional fertilizing. You can use a well-balanced fertilizer such as 20-20-20. Read the instructions on the label carefully before applying. Do not over-fertilize the plant.

Sunlight

Part shade.

Soil

A soil composed of peat moss, loam, or sand, or any soil mixture with good drainage can be used. The soil should not be overly fertile.

Temperature

Provide good air circulation, with temperatures between 65 (18 °C) to 75 F (23 °C) and nighttime temperatures between 50 t(10°C) to 60 F (15 °C).

Container

Pot with drainage holes.
