This is a summer squash, shrubby plant, with yellow or golden fruit and verrucose rind, similar to var. torticollia but a stem end that narrows, ex: Yellow summer squash.
Yellow summer squash, as a general rule, requires 1 inch of water weekly through rainfall or supplemental watering. During hot, dry weather or periods of vigorous growth, the yellow squash benefits from up to 2 inches of water weekly.
Drench plants with a liquid fertilizer when they begin to blossom and set fruits. While summer squash is considered a heavy feeder it requires low nitrogen and fairly high potassium and phosphorous for good fruit development. At Planting - Add an organic granular fertilizer at a rate of 2 to 3 tablespoons per hill of three plants prior to planting.
Grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a sheltered, sunny site. Protect in winter in cold areas.
A container that is about one-third as tall as the plant (measured from the soil line to the highest leaf) often works best.
