What is the plant

Most maples are trees growing to a height of 10–45 m (33–148 ft). Others are shrubs less than 10 meters tall with a number of small trunks originating at ground level. Most species are deciduous, and many are renowned for their autumn leaf colour, but a few in southern Asia and the Mediterranean region are evergreen. Some species of maple are extensively planted as ornamental trees by homeowners, businesses, and municipalities due to their fall colour, relatively fast growth, ease of transplanting.

Maples are important as sources of syrup and wood. Dried wood is often used for the smoking of food.

How to Care for the Plant

Water
A general rule of thumb is to apply 45 liters (10 gallons) of water for every 2.5 cm (inch) of trunk diameter during normal watering conditions. The amount applied per watering remains the same but the frequency is doubled to twice a week during drought conditions.
Pruning
The best time to prune your maple trees is in the late winter or early spring — ideally, you should try to get them pruned before they bloom in the spring. However, you can also prune maple trees in the late summer in order to shape them, slow the growth of certain branches, and to get rid of any dead limbs.
Fertilizer
When feeding a maple tree, use a slow-release shrub and tree fertilizer at rates recommended on the product label. Alternatively, you can feed with mild, organic plant food. Avoid the use of 10-10-10 and other similar quick-release fertilizers.

Sunlight
The best lighting conditions for maple trees are full to partial sunlight exposure. The amount of sunlight depends on the location of the tree. In cooler climates, the maple prefers full sun. However, in warmer climates, the maple tree can wilt under full sun exposure.
Soil
Maple trees grow best in areas where the soil is moist, deep and well-drained. The soil's texture should be fine to medium. Avoid planting your maple trees in dry, sandy or rocky soil. Maintaining soil health is the key to growing big, strong maple trees.
Temperature
The ideal weather conditions for sap collection are daytime temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit and nighttime temps below freezing. Sustained warm temperatures provide an environment for a rapid, massive release of sap by trees over a very short period of time.
