This is an attractive upright mounding shrub up to 5 feet tall with a 6 foot spread. It produces gray-green leaves and yellow, distinctively dome-shaped flowers, that are 4 inches wide on long stems that last for a prolonged period in mid spring on the plant and in the vase.
Directly after planting, your proteas should be watered in thoroughly. After that, they need to be watered so as to maintain soil moisture without causing the soil to be water logged. This means that on most loamy soils, you'll need to water twice or three times a week.
Leucospermum is a relatively easy shrub to grow in warm climates. It likes good air circulation, full sunlight, and ample drainage. In fact, drainage is so vital that these shrubs are often planted on slopes and hills. Do not fertilize.
It is best grown in full sun, in well-draining, acidic soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant.
Tip prune for the first couple of years wherever the shoots have reached 20 to 30 centimetres without branching. Let the plants flower in the third year with no further tip pruning. Cut the flowers with a stem, leaving a bit of stem about 10 centimetres in length behind on the bush.
