Brugmansia is a genus of seven species of flowering plants in the family Solanaceae. They are woody trees or shrubs, with pendulous flowers, and have no spines on their fruit. Their large, fragrant flowers give them their common name of angel's trumpets, a name sometimes used for the closely related genus Datura.

Brugmansia

In modern medicine, important alkaloids such as scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine, found in Brugmansia and other related members of Solanaceae, have proven medical value for their spasmolytic, anti-asthmatic, anticholinergic, narcotic and anesthetic properties, although many of these alkaloids, or their equivalents, are now artificially synthesized.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
One or two deep waterings a week usually is usually enough, except in extremely dry weather. Do not over-water the moonflowers, as this can affect flower growth. Moonflowers do not need additional fertilizer during the season, as they grow best in average soil.
Pruning
Begin pruning the plant when the main trunk forms its first “Y” and then prune back any older branches to encourage additional branching. Cut back as much as one-third of the plant. For larger plants, this could be as much as 1 to 2 feet (0.5 m.).
Fertilizer
Give the plant a nutritional boost by mixing a general-purpose, water-soluble fertilizer into the water every couple of weeks or so.
Sunlight
Full Sun.
Soil
Use a good commercial potting soil and a pot large enough to contain the root mass.
Temperature
Most need a temperature of at least 7–10˚C (45–50˚F).
Container
Moonflowers can be tricky to grow in containers, unless they are very large, because the vines can reach 10' to 20' in length.
Additional
All parts of moonflowers, including the seeds, are toxic, so keep children and pets away from them. All parts of angel's trumpets are considered poisonous and contain the alkaloids atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine. Ingestion of the plants can cause disturbing hallucinations, paralysis, tachycardia, and memory loss and can be fatal.
