Symphyotrichum chilense is a rhizomatous perennial herb growing to heights between 40 centimeters and one meter. The hairy leaves are narrowly oval-shaped, pointed, and sometimes finely serrated along the edges.
An early spring prune (one-third to one-half) will make the plants more bushy and wind tolerant more wind. Deadheading during the season produces more flowers. At season end, the plants can be cut or mowed to the ground in winter. Likes full sun to partial shade.
DERMATITIS Flower heads are arranged in open, flat-top or round-top, branched clusters (cymes), with violet to pink or white ray flowers (petal-like outer part of the aster flower) and yellow disk flowers (centers).
