How to Care for the Plant
Water
During their blooming period, give them a thorough watering once a week if they do not receive an inch of rain that week. Avoid overhead watering. If bloom slows during the summer, trim the whole plant back by about one fourth of its height and spread, water thoroughly and fertilize lightly.
Pruning
Remove the spent flowering spikes to prevent undesired self-seeding. After the big flush of spring flowers you can do two to three periodic trimmings per summer, trimming your verbena's branches/stems back by about one-fourth their length. Doing so encourages new growth and flowers.
Fertilizer
If plants look a little weak or like they could use a boost apply aflower fertilizer.
Sunlight
All verbena needs to grow in full sun to light shade in well-draining soil. Perennial verbenas are heat tolerant and drought tolerant once established. They do well in xeriscape gardens. Verbena is generally referred to as long blooming.
Soil
Verbena stricta thrives on dry soils and well-drained loamy soils.
Temperature
Perennial verbenas are heat tolerant.
