How to Care for the Plant
Water
Water regularly for the first year but not to the point of sogginess. Thereafter, water occasionally especially during periods of hot, dry weather but be careful not to overwater. Red yucca plants in containers need water more frequently. Don't cut the flower stalks after blooming, as they will produce fruit.
Pruning
Snip off dead or winter-damaged foliage from the interior of the plant with hand pruners. Reach into the center of the red yucca plant with long-handled loppers, and cut the flower spike off at the base when the flower has faded. Remove any dried flower spikes at their base in winter.
Fertilizer
Hummingbird yucca plants require very little fertilizer, but you can feed them lightly before new growth appears in spring. Use a good-quality, general-purpose fertilizer.
Temperature
The Red Yucca is a fan of the heat, but has to be accustomed to surviving those dips. The Chihuahuan Desert can reach freezing temperatures, even sitting as low as -12 degrees Celsius, or 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Your indoor Hesperaloe parviflora won't have anything to worry about!
