What is the plant

The Aglaonema "Sparkling Sarah" is just one of many varieties of Chinese Evergreen plant. An attractive, easy to care for plant, it is on just about everyones list of best indoor house plants. Aglaonema plants can be maintained at the lower light levels often found in the home or office. Although there are many varieties of this plant, the care for all indoor Aglaonema plants is very similar. Some of the more common Aglaonema varieties are the Aglaonema Emerald Beauty, Silver Queen and the Aglaonema Silver Bay. Aglaonema plants have a bush-like or clumping growth and, depending on the pot size, can be from 8 inches to 4 feet in height. These Aglaonema plants are often used in interior landscapes.

The most common advice I have been given for the Aglaonema is the darker the leaves and stalks, the less light is needed. I would say to be safe a bright room with the plant sitting in a shaded spot is best. Avoid direct sunlight.

A peat based potting soil mixed with part perlite or sand to improve drainage is ideal or any other well draining potting mix.

Temperatures between 65-80 ºF (18-27 ºC) are ideal. Lower than 60ºF (15ºC) is not healthy for this plant and can cause dark patches on the leaves. If the leaves begin to curl and the edges turn brown the temperature is probably too low or cold drafts may be affecting the plant.
