This perennial bulbous plant is native to Eurasia. It produces dense spikes which are commonly blue and urn shaped flowers. Sometimes it is grown as an ornamental plant such as spring bulb in temperate climates.
The plant is herbaceous which grows to 25 cm with 2-3 by 2-2.5 cm ovoid bulbs covered with dark brown tunic. Leaves are linear to lanceolate measuring 5 to 35 cm long and 0.25 to 0.75 cm wide. Scapes are 25 cm long.
Plant perennial 15-35 cm, smooth , growing in clumps and provided fairly loose
- leaves 3-5, linear gutter, wide 3-8 mm, green foxtail , semi-erect or dressées- spread ,. almost equal to or exceeding the stem
- flowers blue-violet, with a suave and fleeting smell, in a conical raceme at the end oblong and a little loose, 1 to 2 cm wide
- pedicels horizontal after flowering, a little shorter than the flower
- perianth globose, 4-5 mm
- capsule with 9-11 mm wide valves , wider than long, having their greatest width in the middle, a little notched
- seeds striated rough .
