Chinese Arborvitae brings a warm glow to the landscape with its rich golden foliage. The overall habit is similar to the green upright arborvitaes and the uses are the same. They grow quickly and are a good choice for a hedge or privacy screen. Have fun mixing different flower and foliage textures with golden arborvitae in a mixed border. Prune freely to maintain the desired size and shape. Many small bird species will find the dense foliage a safe and appealing place to build nests.Perfect for narrow spaces and small garden settings. Great planted along a wall or fence or used to create a natural fence or border. A nice soft texture for mixing with other types of evergreens.
For the first few months after you plant your Emerald Green Arborvitae, it will need to be watered twice weekly. Watering the right amount is imperative. Too little, and the leaves brown or yellow.
The east window is often considered the best window for houseplants as it's cooler than the west window without the dangers of overheating. West windows received full sun for part of the day and bright light for the rest, great for flowering plants.
Young plants need extra phosphorus to encourage good root development. Look for a fertilizer that has phosphorus, P, in it(the second number on the bag.) Apply recommended amount for plant per label directions in the soil at time of planting or at least during the first growing season.
Does best in conventional potting soils that contain ingredients such as peat, manure, and black hummus.
Arborvitae will withstand heavy pruning and shearing because new branches develop from concealed buds in the branch crotches. Prune in early spring or mid-summer. When heavy pruning is necessary, prune before new growth begins in early spring so that new growth conceals pruning cuts.
When you know that cold weather will hit, move the pot to a protected area and surround the pot with blankets or straw. Regardless of how you overwinter your arborvitae, keep the shrub in partially shady conditions and reduce watering to keep the roots from rotting.
