Hosta are among the most popular of perennials for shady areas, with hundreds of varieties now readily available. Plants form sturdy mounds of foliage, topped with lily-like blooms. This large specimen selection has big, heart-shaped powdery-blue leaves, and stems of near-white flowers in midsummer. Also good for planting in mixed containers or tubs. Hosta go completely dormant in the fall, and the dying foliage can be removed any time before mid spring. Easily divided in either spring or fall, but plants may be left alone for years. Good slug resistance. Received a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (1993). An old selection but still an excellent large blue-leaved type, and certainly considered to be a garden classic. While deer enjoy eating Hosta, this variety may be slightly less palatable to deer than others.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
The best way to water a peace lily is to set the plant in the sink. pour water slowly onto the soil until liquid drips through the bottom of the pot. let the plant drain thoroughly, then return it to its drainage saucer. never let the plant sit in water, as disease caused by excess water is the number one reason for houseplant death.
Pruning
Lily flowers should be removed as soon as they fade. Blooms left in place will produce seed, which diverts energy from flower production and plant growth. The flowers can be cut or pinched off. Alternatively, cut the stalks when the blooms first open and use them in floral arrangements.
Fertilizer
Liquid fertilizers are applied more frequently, bi-weekly or monthly, for example. Granular products are used less frequently, perhaps once every month or two. Slow-release houseplant fertilizers break down slowly and release their nutrients in small amounts, over a longer period of time. A single application of most of these products lasts for three to four months.
Sunlight
Partial sun generally means less than six and more than four hours of sun per day. Plants for partial sun will do well in a location where they receive a break from the sun each day. They like the sun but will not tolerate a full day of it and need at least some shade each day.
Soil
They need well-drained, moisture-retentive soil, so add lots of organic matter when planting. In heavy clay soils, plant the bulbs on a layer of coarse sand or gravel to improve drainage.

Increase pot size by 2.5-5 cm (1 to 2 inches) in diameter for plants that are growing in pots 25.4 cm (10 inches) in diameter or less. For larger plants, those growing in pots greater than 10 inches in diameter, increase the pot size by 5 or 7.62 cm (2 or 3 inches) in diameter.
