P. menziesii is a conical to columnar, coniferous, evergreen tree with thick, ridged, reddish-brown bark and spreading branches bearing sharp-pointed, reddish-brown buds opening to soft, linear, dark green leaves. Conical, brown female cones with long, erect bracts are borne in winter.
