A strangler fig with leathery, glossy green leaves and small, orange fruits that usually starts out as an epiphyte on established trees, sending a few thin roots down to the ground that over time develop into thick trunks encasing and eventually killing the host tree. Cultivated trees usually develop a very wide crown and only a short, thick trunk. It is widespread from the Moluccas to New Guinea, eastern Australia and the southwestern Pacific and a popular ornamental for tropical regions.
