How to Care for the Plant
Water
Two days after the top part of the soil dries in spring and summer, it is necessary to water with soft, preliminary settled water corresponding to soil temperature. In winter, limit the watering.
Pruning
S. actinophylla does not need annual pruning except for pruning the top of tall adult specimens in spring.
Fertilizer
Feed S. actinophylla no more than once a month during winter (or do not fertilize it at all) and once a week during spring and summer time. It will be perfect to use mineral fertilizer for decorative and deciduous plants.
Sunlight
Although the tree tolerates direct sunlight, bright diffused light is the best option. The plant will grow comfortably on the western and eastern windows.
Soil
Soil for the Umbrella tree needs to be light, permeable, but fertile. Make such a substrate yourself: all you need is just to take two parts of sod land, one part of humus, and one part of sand, and mix.
Propagation
Seeds, cuttings, and layering may carry the reproduction of Umbrella trees.
Temperature
Maintain the temperature at around 68 °F (20 °C) in spring and summer and not lower than 54 °F (12 °C) in winter. Still, for the tree’s growth, you should try to maintain it within 59-63 °F (15-17 °C).
Container
Choose a large pot for this tall plant and consider that it should also include enough space for a thick drainage layer and holes in the bottom.
Fun fact
Such an interesting finger-dissected leaf! It looks like a palm with outstretched fingers.
