How to Care for the Plant
Water
This turquoise beauty should be watered generously, especially on hot sunny days. Soak the roots thoroughly when the top inch of the soil appears to be dry.
Pruning
Prune off withered blooms and overgrown vines to encourage branching once or twice a year. Keep in mind that pruning your Jade vine too much affects abundant flowering.
Fertilizer
Strongylodon macrobotrys needs feeding twice a month during the growing season. Use a liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength. To make your vine grow fast, apply balanced fertilizers high in nitrogen. However, the nitrogen content should be reduced once the plant enters the flowering period. In winter, no feeding is required.
Sunlight
Jade vine is quite sun-loving. It would be best to place your green pet next to a south-facing window.
Soil
This plant isn’t picky as long as the soil is rich in humus and drains well. You might need to enrich your potting mix with coarse sand and manure or compost. For potted plants, a peat-based blend will do.
Temperature
The plant grows in warm, humid climates (USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 12). 59˚F (15°C) is the lowest temperature they can bear.
Container
Jade vine needs a pot with drainage holes for excessive water. The material doesn’t matter, but clay containers provide extra air circulation for the roots to breathe. It's a trailing plant, so it's common to put it in hanging pots. You can provide a sturdy trellis for the vine to climb, or place your greenie in a hanging basket (until it becomes too heavy).
Fun fact
Despite the exotic appearance, the Jade vine is closely related to common kidney and runner beans.
