Although a relative of the somewhat finicky African violet, lipstick plants are very easy care indoor flowering houseplants. When given the right amount of light and not too much water, lipstick plants produce numerous red or orange small tubular flowers throughout the year. Not only are the flowers colorful, the leaves can be light green, dark green, or green and maroon. Hang lipstick plants from the ceiling, place them in a wall sconce, or sit one on a table, you will love having them as one of your houseplants.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
Too much water is disastrous for growing lipstick plants. You should water the plants moderately and be sure not to soak the soil or you risk root rot and fungal problems.
Fertilizer
Feed every other week in the spring and summer, and monthly in the fall and winter with a houseplant food high in phosphorous. Always dilute the fertilizer to 1/2 the recommended strength.
Sunlight
The Aeschynanthus lipstick vine will not bloom without adequate light. Avoid placing this plant in full shade or full sun. The plant needs bright light for a portion of the day, but not all day long.
Soil
Use a balanced well-aerated houseplant mix that drains quickly.
Temperature
Air and soil temperatures must be a minimum of 70 to 80°F (21-27°C) for proper blooming. You will get some blooming at 65°F (18°C), but it will be limited. At 50°F (10°C), you risk chilling, which is an injury that results in dark red leaves.
Container
Choose a pot with enough drainage holes.
