How to Care for the Plant
Water
Grow ghost fern in a spot that has moist, but well-drained soil. Water deeply and regularly.
Pruning
As a rule, ferns don't really need pruning. Ferns in nature are generally self-cleaning and will release old fronds as they die. In the garden, occasional removal of dead fronds will improve the appearance of the plant, but it is strictly cosmetic.
Fertilizer
It prefers lots of organic matter in the soil, so amend with compost, especially if you have sand or clay. Ferns are relatively light feeders compared to many other foliage plants. They prefer a balanced fertilizer, such as 20-10-20 or 20-20-20, with micronutrients applied at approximately 200 ppm nitrogen. Too much nitrogen can cause tip burn on the roots and leaves if the plant becomes dry.
Sunlight
Full sun to part shade.
Soil
Perform well in most types of soil.
Temperature
Average room temperatures 65-75°f/18-24°c.
Additional
Enzootic hematuria, the most common form of bracken fern poisoning, primarily affects cattle and less frequently affects sheep. It is characterized by intermittent hematuria and anemia. Poisoning most often occurs during late summer when other feed is scarce, or when animals are fed hay containing bracken fern.
