Achillea tomentosa, commonly known as woolly yarrow, is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is sometimes kept as a garden plant, and occasionally naturalizes outside its original range of dry lowland habitats of southern Europe and (possibly) western Asia. It is a recipient of the RHS's Award of Garden Merit.
Dead-head regularly to extend flowering period. Staking is seldom necessary, except for very tall varieties in exposed areas. Cut down to ground level in the autumn. Alternatively, you can leave the seed heads over-winter to form an architectural effect, then cut back in early Spring.
Grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a sheltered, sunny site. Protect in winter in cold areas.
Achillea require no pruning or attention and are generally pest free. Ideally to prolong flowering Achillea should be dead headed, but it is tempting to leave the flowers on the plant, because they look so good as they fade.
