Rosa rugosa (rugosa rose, beach rose, Japanese rose, Ramanas rose, or letchberry) is a species of rose native to eastern Asia, in northeastern China, Japan, Korea and southeastern Siberia, where it grows on beach coasts, often on sand dunes. It should not be confused with Rosa multiflora, which is also known as "Japanese rose".

How to Care for the Plant
Water
Rugosa roses establish best if they are planted in the spring and kept well watered through their first growing season. They also prefer an area where there is little competition from weeds and nearby plants.
Pruning
Rugosa rose pruning only needs to take place every few years between late winter and early spring. Rugosa roses have foliage far denser than most varieties, making late winter to early spring, just as new leaf buds begin to swell, the proper time to prune. Snipping the flowers from rugosa roses during the growing season can give you fragrant short-stemmed bouquets as well as bring on a stronger secondary flush of bloom. Cut flowers down to 1/4 inch above the next outward facing stem with five leaflets, or to a stem farther down if the cane doesn't seem sturdy enough to support new growth and flowers above that point.
Fertilizer
Unless your soil is very poor, your rugosa rose shouldn't need a lot of supplemental feeding. A slow-release, complete fertilizer in the spring should suffice. Some varieties have a sensitivity to chemical fertilizers and seem to fare better if they are watered well before feeding.
