Lewisia leeana (orth.var. L. leana) is a species of flowering plant in the family Montiaceae known by the common name quill-leaf lewisia. It is native to California and Oregon, where it grows in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada and Klamath Ranges. This is a perennial herb growing from narrow, woody taproot connected to one or more caudices. It produces a basal rosette of many fleshy flat to cylindrical blunt-tipped leaves up to 4 centimeters long.
Water only occasionally. Once the plants are placed in a garden situation, provide them with moderate water, excellent drainage, and a minimum of nutrients. Although Rainbow bitterroot plants are considered drought-tolerant perennials, it is still a good idea to provide them with water during hot weather (especially while they are flowering) if you are growing them in full sun. However, it is essential that their roots not be sitting in water during the winter (thus the need for sharp drainage).
They should be planted in sunny areas, but with light shade at noon and the hottest lunchtime hours, with light diffusion.
it is necessary to choose a quality soil mixture. Usually they use universal substrates consisting of garden soil with additions of sand and compost.
Will flower colorfully only in small containers and pots, because excessive free soil can cause active vegetation to the detriment of flowering. Note that it is better to plant this perennial in containers with several drainage holes.
