Spanish Lavender Care

Water plants deeply but infrequently, when the soil is almost dry.

For most lavender varieties, pruning is best done during spring, summer, or fall after harvest. It's important to prune a few months before winter sets in to prevent frost and breakage from the snow. Regular pruning twice a year gives your plant time regenerate fresh flowers and stay in good shape for the next season.

The best (and only) time for fertilizing lavender is in the springtime at the start of the growing season. The easiest and best thing to do is to put down an inch (2.5 cm.) of good compost around the plant. This should provide plenty of nutrients for the year to come.

Lavender is a Mediterranean plant (in needs if not always in geographic origin) and needs lots of sun and fast-draining soil. It will not survive long in shady, damp or extremely cold conditions. It prefers poor, dry or moderately fertile soil, including chalky and alkaline soils.

Lavenders, including Spanish lavender, are usually considered cold hardy to around 10 degrees Fahrenheit, making them a zone 8 plant. I have grown several species, including the French lavender, when temperatures have fallen much lower.

Select a container that provides your Lavender enough room to grow. A 12-16 in. pot (30-40 cm) will be perfect. Make sure it has at least a 1/2-in.
