How to Care for the Plant
Water
While poppies can handle drought, watering the soil thoroughly once a week can help the flowers thrive and encourage more blooms.
Pruning
Cut back and deadhead Oriental poppies after flowering. Cutting them right back to ground level will stimulate growth of fresh new foliage, and perhaps even some new blooms. Mulching and feeding will help to support this new growth.
Fertilizer
Poppies do not usually need fertilizer although an abundance of nitrogen in the soil can cause them to have a profusion of leafy growth instead of flowers. In this case, a phosphorous-rich fertilizer can help balance the soil nutrients to encourage flowering.
Sunlight
Full Sun, Partial Sun.
Soil
Ideally the soil should be pH 6 to 8. The plant blooms in Summer with large white flowers with yellow centers.
Temperature
Min temperature 55°F (13°C).
