Some cultivars have been bred to grow partially submerged in shallow water as well as in saturated soils. In drier planting areas, at least 1-2" of water per week is needed to keep Canna lilies looking their best.

Deadhead Cannas throughout the growing season to keep them blooming for as long as possible. Very sensitive to frost, this Canna Lily is a tender perennial that is only hardy to zones 8-11. Therefore, in cooler areas, its bulb will have to be dug up before the first frost and stored indoors over the winter in a dry place before being replanted in spring.

Cannas are not terribly picky when it comes to fertilizer. Cannas easily bloom all summer without much effort. For those of you who want to give your plants an extra boost, we recommend applying 5-10-5 or 10-10-10 two or three times during the growing season.

Sandy potting mix – Lilies do best in partially sandy soils. Potting mixes that are mostly peat will stay too wet and again cause bulb rot. However, you can buy any potting mix and just add sand to it.

Lilies can withstand heat into the 90-degree Fahrenheit temperatures and stand up to cold below freezing level. Tropical regions can be a problem since lilies need a cold season that drops below 65 degrees Fahrenheit for at least eight weeks.

A medium to large, well-draining pot – Proper drainage is very important for lilies. While they like moist soil, sopping wet soil will cause the bulbs to rot. Make sure you select a container with drainage holes on the bottom. For extra drainage, add a layer of rocks in the bottom of the pot.
