Alternanthera caracasana is a species of flowering plant in the family Amaranthaceae known by the common names khakiweed, washerwoman and mat chaff flower. It is native to Central and South America but is well-known elsewhere as a noxious weed.
Water the aechmea plant thoroughly. Wait until the soil is fully dry before watering the plant again. Water should never soak the soil of the aechmea, and the soil should not be wet for long periods of time, as this can result in root rot.
Use a liquid fertilizer on the aechmea plants during the summer. Mist the leaves of the plant about every six weeks using a liquid fertilizer diluted to half.
Aechmea, like all other Bromeliaceae plants, requires soil that is sufficiently rich and very well-drained to grow well. Special Bromeliaceae soil mix is the best solution but you can also opt for flower plant soil mix and layer the bottom with a thick drainage medium.
Bromeliads often have both striking foliage as well as flowers. However, a bromeliad will only bloom once throughout its lifespan.
Most full sized bromeliads will not require a planter pot larger than 6 inches. Using a larger plant container than needed can lead to over-watering issues.
