Playboy - A standout in the garden. One of the most eye-catching of all shrub roses that draws garden visitors like a magnet. Single 4" blooms (petals 7-11) of orange-copper, gold and scarlet with ruffled petals on a compact continual blooming bush
You should prune your rose Playboy in the very early spring, after the weather breaks but before the roses have opened. This makes it much easier to see what you are doing. Start by removing all the dead and discolored wood from the plant and set your cuttings aside. Next, prune back any overlapping lateral canes from the plant as these will compete for sun light once the leaves have fully opened. Lastly, give the remaining canes a cut back by about one third of their current height to promote new growth. This is also the time to cleanup around the base of your Playboy roses and get rid of all the dead leaves and debris that tend to collect there over the growing season. Never let this dead material lay around your roses as it can quickly turn into a breeding ground for various pests and diseases. Throw all of this away in the trash, along with your cuttings. Finish up your pruning by giving your rose Playboy a fresh new layer of mulch to start off the growing season.
You also should consider giving your Playboy roses a dose of a granular all-purpose fertilizer in the early spring when the leaves begin to form. This will give your roses a great jump on the season. Like most Floribundas, this variety is also a repeat bloomer so it will benefit greatly if you give it a few additional feedings over the course of the growing season. I will give my roses a second dose right after they complete their first big bloom, then a third dose sometime around the middle of the summer to encourage some late season flushes. Your rose Playboy will do well on this schedule also.
