Aquilegia is a genus of about 60–70 species of perennial plants that are found in meadows, woodlands, and at higher altitudes throughout the Northern Hemisphere, known for the spurred petals of their flowers. Perennial herbs, with woody, erect stock, roots forming thick rhizomes. The basal leaves are compound, 1–3 ternate, blades 3-lobed -partite, and lobes lobulate and obtuse. The cauline leaves are similar to the basal ones, while the upper ones are bract like.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
The plant will grow in full sun if you keep it watered daily. Make sure the soil drains well wherever you plant Granny's Bonnet.
Pruning
Cut back the faded flower stems after they have flowered. If the foliage looks tatty, you can also cut back the foliage near ground level, when flowering is finished. New fresh leaves will quickly emerge from the base, but the plant will not produce a second flush of flowers.
Fertilizer
Feed your Granny's Bonnet monthly with water-soluble, all-purpose fertilizer. Make sure to keep the plants watered during the growing season. Remove any faded flowers promptly to extend the lifespan of your Granny's Bonnet.
Soil
It likes moist but free-draining soil where it will self-seed prolifically. You can either collect the ripe black seed in the early autumn and sow it in pots in cold frames, or gently move the young self-sown plants in the garden to more favourable positions in the spring.
Temperature
Remove them and place the flats in a room with good sunlight, moist soil and temperatures that range from 70 to 75 degrees so they will germinate. Sow Granny's Bonnet seed directly in the garden from early spring up until the middle of the summer. The seeds will germinate faster with light, so leave them uncovered.
Container
They are sold as plants in containers and pots.
Additional
Aquilegia flabellata has no toxic effects reported. Columbine, also called granny's bonnet, or correctly aquilegia, is a classic flower of the cottage garden. It is a native wild flower, though a rare one, located mainly in the centre of the country, with dark purple-blue flowers. There are lots of seemingly wild plants, but these are really just garden escapees.
