In the wild, it mostly grows across the edge of rainforests, rocky areas and is famous because of its ability to attract butterflies. It is long-lived and can grow to long lengths if left untrimmed. Other names for this plant include Waxvine, Honey plant, and Porcelain Flower. The waxy flowers on this grow in late winter and last well throughout summer.

How to Care for the Plant

  • Water

Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out between watering. In their rest period (winter), water lightly to prevent the plant from drying out but don't overwater.

For wax plants that are flowering, however, switch to a 5:10:3 with a high phosphorus number to encourage blooming. Use a high phosphate fertilizer for 2 months prior to the plant's normal blooming time. That will fuel the plant to produce more profuse and larger blooms.

  • Fertilizer

Allow flowers to fade and fall naturally without cutting or pinching off the short flower stems, called spurs or penducles.

Naturally epiphytic, so demands loose, well-draining potting mix. I prefer to use equal parts coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark, with about 10% worm castings to improve soil fertility.
