How to Care for the Plant
Water
Flax lily does best in partial shade to heavy shade. Dianella tasmanica tolerates clay, sand and some water-logging but prefers well-drained soils. Prevent rapidly colonization of Dianella by watering infrequently. Once established, flax lily can be drought tolerant.
Pruning
The best time to cut flax lilies back is during the fall after the foliage has dried out. Before cutting the plant back, remove all dead and damaged stems from the plant and pluck out any remaining flower stalks.
Fertilizer
The ideal time to fertilize the variegated flax lily is just before it produces new spring growth. Choose a fertilizer labeled for use on azaleas and camellias, and apply it to the soil around the plant.
Soil
This plant does well in well-drained soil located in areas with either sun or part shade, making it ideal for areas with shifting levels of sunshine. While flax lily can be killed back by frost, if your plant is well-established it will likely grow back from the roots once temperatures begin to warm back up.
Temperature
This species is hardy to about 20 degrees. If killed to the ground by hard freezing, blue flax lily should sprout new leaves when soil and air temperatures rise in late winter.
