Graptopetalum (leatherpetal) is a plant genus of the family Crassulaceae. They are perennial succulent plants and native to Mexico and Arizona. They grow usually in a rosette. There are around 19 species in this genus.
Graptopetalums need excellent drainage and moderate water. You can tell when to water by sticking your finger in the soil. If it is dry several inches down or the fleshy leaves are looking shriveled, you should water. Over watering is a cause of root rots and the plant can get several pest infestations.
Provide a well-drained soil away from reflected heat. Once established, water infrequently during the hot season. Ideal in warm climate landscapes and container gardens. Echeveria filiferum is especially happy sitting on your windowsill as a houseplant.
Cultivation: The Graptopetalum usually tolerate temperature higher than 5/8° C, with the exception of a variety, G. paraguayense, which resists up to -5°C and because of that it is cultivated outdoors in northern Italy. The watering should completely be suspended in winter.
Non-Toxic Graptopetalum filiferum is a beautiful clumping succulent. It consists of a flat rosette that can grow to 10-15cm in diameter. The leaves are short, fat but feature a candy-pink coloured spike at the tip. The flowers are star-shaped and white with red tips.
