Pruning
Spring or early summer are the best times to trim the plant and take cuttings.
Fertilizer
Give dwarf powderpuff regular irrigation with time to dry out between waterings. Fertilize in spring, summer and autumn with a quality granular fertilizer. Supplement feedings if you like with bone meal and/or liquid fertilizer to promote heavier bloom.
Sunlight
The pink powderpuff needs full sun or very light partial shade, whether grown indoors or outdoors. Place as indoor house plants near a window, even during the winter.
Temperature
If space in your home is limited, you should consider growing a dwarf variety of the Powderpuff tree, which can be easily managed as a 2-3 foot plant by careful pruning. Indoors, Calliandra haematocephala needs bright light to full sun, fairly high humidity and an average room temperature of 60°-75°.
Additional
Dwarf powderpuff is native to Mexico and Central America. The pink to red flowers are held in rounded clusters about one and a half to two inches in diameter. It flowers over a long season on new growth. After a cold winter kills it to the ground, it will not flower until late summer or fall.
