How to Care for the Plant
Water
It needs a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Although Hibiscus calyphyllus prefers moist, hot summers, it is semi-frost resistant. In a cold, frosty garden, however, a warmer, sheltered spot in the garden is preferable and will produce better results.
Pruning
Prune the hibiscus tree in late winter, recommends Hibiscus World, before new growth appears on the plant. The goal is to prune this evergreen late enough in the season that new growth will not be damaged by a cold spell and early enough to catch the plant before it has already used a lot of energy to create new growth. The best time to prune is when the older leaves on the bottom of the plant turn yellow and begin to fall off.
Sunlight
It should be planted in full sun but can stand light shade under a tree or on a patio. It needs a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Although Hibiscus calyphyllus prefers moist, hot summers, it is semi-frost resistant.
Soil
It is a relatively fast-growing plant, providing that it is planted in fertile, rich and well-drained soil. Enrich the soil with a considerable amount of compost and organic material. The soil pH should range from mildly acidic (6.1 to 6.5) to neutral (6.6 to 7.5). Prune the shrub towards the end of summer.
Temperature
The tropical hibiscus plant prefers average temperatures between 55 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Prolonged heat over 85 degrees Fahrenheit can result in dropping buds and leaves
