Spathodea is a monotypic genus in the flowering plant family Bignoniaceae. The single species it contains, Spathodea campanulata, is commonly known as the African tulip tree. The tree grows between 7–25 m (23–82 ft) tall and is native to tropical dry forests of Africa.
This tree, originary from Africa, is very common as a urban tree in Medellin. The flowers initially are closed and contain water. The children cut the end of the container and push it so a jet of water comes out, very similar to the way urine comes out. For this they are normally called "mionas" that means urinations.
