Versatile and compact, Prunus persica 'Harvester' is a dwarf peach tree adorned with profuse pink blossoms in spring. They are followed by a heavy crop of medium sized, freestone, orange-yellow fruits blushed deep carmine in mid-late summer. The flesh is firm, sweet and juicy. Perfect for eating, baking and canning.

How to Care for the Plant

Water
Semi-dwarf peach trees should be watered once a month during the winter and at least once a week during the rest of the year. To determine when the tree needs water, touch the soil—if it’s dry, water it until it’s moist.
Pruning
The goal when pruning peach trees is to remove old, slow growing, non-fruitful shoots and leave 1-year-old, 18 to 24 inch (45-60 cm.) red bearing shoots. About 40% of the tree should be pruned out annually. The first step is to remove all rootstock suckers and water sprouts from the lower three feet of the tree.
Fertilizer
Newly planted peach trees should be fertilized one week after planting and again a month and a half after that. An established Harvester peach tree should be fertilized twice a year—once in early spring and once in late spring or early summer, since that’s when the plant is going through the fruit production process. Consider using a balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to promote an overall healthy tree. Some potential ratios are 10-10-10, 12-12-12, and 20-20-20.

The harvester peach grows in loamy, sandy, and well-drained soils. It is not drought-tolerant.
Temperature
Peaches need at least 600 chilling hours at 45 degrees Fahrenheit or lower to trigger fruiting. Extended temperatures below zero may damage the trees. Peaches tolerate humid conditions, but excessive wetness can encourage fungal diseases.
