The Opuntia Cylindrica Cristata is a very unique and beautiful cactus which is a member of the Prickly Pear family. Wavy and undulating emerald green pads have white areoles and softish tiny spines. This strange cactus makes a great and intriguing houseplant. Very easy to keep, needing minimal maintenance. Probably the only ones at this size for sale in the UK.
Once your Opuntia has roots, care is very simple. Continue to give it enough water to thoroughly drench the soil every couple of weeks. A pot with adequate drainage can help prevent this problem. You wouldn't want someone to force you to drink when you're not thirsty, and these prickly pears are the same.
Requires porous cactus soil and adequate airflow. Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. Protect from frost; hardy to 32F.
Pruning: It's not necessary to prune prickly pears, but they can be cut back. Remove individual pads as needed to maintain shape and size. Use tongs to hold the pad and a sharp knife to cut it off at the joint, or line where it connects to the next pad.
