How to Care for the Plant
Water
Insert the probe of a moisture meter 6 inches into the soil at the base of the apricot tree. You must water the tree when the meter reads between four and seven, indicating moist soil to a depth of 6 inches. Most moisture meters have a needle that points to the following gradations when inserted in soil: one through three, represented in red numerals, indicates dry; four through seven, represented in green numerals, indicates moist; eight through 10, indicated in black numerals, represents wet. Rinse and dry the probe to use after watering.
Pruning
Prune apricot trees in late winter or early spring as the new leaves and flowers begin to open. During this period of time the tree is actively growing and the pruning cuts heal quickly so that diseases have little chance to enter the wounds. It also corrects problems early, and your cuts will be smaller.
Fertilizer
Fertilizing is an excellent way to replenish the nutrients in your soil, especially nitrogen. Nitrogen encourages green vegetative growth, which is exactly what you want to promote before your apricot tree reaches its fruit-bearing years.
Soil
The trees should be planted on well drained soil in warm areas out of the wind.
Temperature
When growing aprium trees, they require a climate with warm springs and summers for harvest, but they also need 600 chilling hours with temps below 45 degrees F. (7 C).
