The flowers appear in the summer and are purple, blue, or white in nature. The plant is cultivated as a garden flower. Several cultivars are available, including the cornflower blue 'Klaus Jelitto', 'Colorwheel', which is white, turning purple over time, and 'Blue Danube', which has a blue flower head with a white center.[4] More unusual cultivars include the pink-flowered 'Rosea' and yellow-flowered 'Mary Gregory'. Like a few other plants (such as some species of Vernonia), it contains vernolic acid, a vegetable oil with commercial applications. The genus is named after Jonathan Stokes (1755–1831), English botanist and physician.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
Keep new plantings moist and continue watering regularly until the flowers are finished blooming. As a rule of thumb, the soil your asters reside in should stay consistently moist but never saturated. One thing to note: Try to water the base of your asters without splashing water on the leaves—doing so can cause mildew or fungal growth. One inch of rain or watering once a week is usually recommended for most perennial plants.
Pruning
You will pinch off the growing tips and the first sets of leaves on stems of the plant. Pinch them off just above the node for the best results. Pinch asters from mid-spring to early-summer. Pinching promotes the growth of more blooms because it encourages more branching in the aster plant.
Fertilizer
Asters are moderate feeders, and they appreciate being fed with a balanced flower fertilizer twice a month, beginning in spring and continuing until the blooms begin to open. Excessive nutrients can shorten the blooming time, so stop fertilizing asters in August.
Soil
Stokes' aster is easy to care for once established. It performs best in partially sunny locations with well-drained, acidic soil and can grow from 10 to 24 inches tall. While this plant requires very little maintenance, you may need to divide mature clumps.
Temperature
Indoor aster seed care involves keeping the seeds at a temperature of 65-70 degrees F. (18-21 degrees C.)
Container
These perennial flowers work wonderfully as borders or grown in containers.
Additional
Stokesia 'Klaus Jelitto' has no toxic effects reported. Stokes aster is a low perennial, 12-18 in. tall, with a basal cluster of dark-green, lance-shaped leaves. The numerous, solitary, flower heads are 3-4 in. across, with deeply divided blue rays and very prominent blue florets from the disk.
