How to Care for the Plant
Water
Water the seedling deeply right after planting and keep the soil evenly moist for two to three weeks afterward. Because this is a tropical plant, water it with an overhead sprinkler every couple of days after the establishment period.
Pruning
Unless you're harvesting flowers, the best time to prune the tree is when it's not actively blooming or developing flower buds so you don't reduce the tree's normally heavy bloom production. In warm areas, however, ylang-ylang trees can produce flowers year-round. Judicious pruning of dead or damaged branches can be done anytime. The trees seem to have few insect or disease problems, but you can prune away infested or diseased areas as soon as you discover them. Always disinfect your pruning tools before you begin, even if you don't see any problems.
Fertilizer
Fertilize the ylang ylang tree once monthly from late spring to late summer with half the recommended dose of a balanced bloom fertilizer. Usually, these fertilizers have little or no nitrogen, and this encourages blooming rather than foliage growth throughout the growing season.
Sunlight
Sandy
Soil
Heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: acid and neutral soils and can grow in very acid
Temperature
It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 20 - 30c, but can tolerate 16 - 34c[ 418 ]. It can be killed by temperatures of 5c or lower[ 418 ]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 1,500 - 2,000mm, but tolerates 700 - 2,800mm[ 418 ].
Container
To grow it in container, plant 'Cananga fruticosa', this is a dwarf variety of ylang ylang.
