How to Care for the Plant
Water
When you plant your garlic cloves, put them about 6″ apart to allow for lots of room for growth. They need to be placed about 4″ deep in the soil, then gently watered.
Pruning
Since the bulb is what we eat, we recommend cutting the scape. Plus, scapes are delicious and can be used just like garlic, but they are ready a month or two before the garlic bulb. Win, win! To cut your scape, wait until the center stalk completely forms and grows above the rest of the plant.
Fertilizer
Fertilizing your garlic can occur either by side dressing or broadcasting fertilizer over the entire bed. The best garlic plant fertilizer will be high in nitrogen, those containing blood meal or a synthetic source of nitrogen. To side-dress, work the fertilizer in an inch (2.5 cm.)
Soil
About two weeks to a month before planting amend the soil with compost or mushroom manure (avoid too much manure, as this has been linked to garlic rust problems). You will also want to lime the soil at this time as garlic prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
Temperature
It requires cool and moist climate during vegetative growth and bulb development stages but warm dry weather during maturity. The suitable growth temperature for garlic is 13 to 24°C. It can be grown well at elevations of 1000-1300 m above sea-level.
