What is the plant

Geranium is a genus of 422 species of annual, biennial, and perennial plants that are commonly known as geraniums or cranesbills. They are found throughout the temperate regions of the world and the mountains of the tropics, but mostly in the eastern part of the Mediterranean region. The palmately cleft leaves are broadly circular in form. The flowers have five petals and are coloured white, pink, purple or blue, often with distinctive veining. Geraniums will grow in any soil as long as it is not waterlogged. Propagation is by semiripe cuttings in summer, by seed, or by division in autumn or spring.

Geraniums are eaten by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including brown-tail, ghost moth, and mouse moth. At least several species of Geranium are gynodioecious.

How to Care for the Plant

  • Water

Should be done deeply and once the soil begins to feel dry indoors or at least weekly outdoors (though potted plants may need daily watering in hot weather), fertilizing is usually necessary. Use a water-soluble houseplant fertilizer or a 5-10-5 fertilizer with additional organic matter every four to six weeks throughout their active growing season.

  • Pruning

Jane recommends pruning geraniums and pelargoniums back by between one third to one half during March or April. Come spring, the plants will rocket away, bush up beautifully and give a lovely flush of flowers. When pruning, don't throw the cuttings away – they are really great for propagating.

  • Fertilizer

Ideally, outdoor geraniums will benefit from a slow-release fertilizer to prevent leaching of nitrogen during heavy rains and to ensure a steady supply of nitrogen to the growing plants. In proper growing conditions, outdoor geraniums require a complete dry fertilizer such as 5-10-5.
