Ctenanthe burle-marxii commonly known as the fishbone prayer plant, is a species of plant in the genus Ctenanthe native to Brazil. Its common name derives from the alternating pattern of stripes on its oval, pale green leaves. Similar to other plants in the family Marantaceae it also has a propensity to close up its leaves at night, which is why it is also called a "prayer plant" like Maranta leuconeura. It grows well as a form of tropical ground cover, often in shade.
Calathea Burle Marx likes to dry out occasionally between watering. They will tolerate staying moist but prefer not to have constantly wet soil. If their soil stays too wet, they could be susceptible to root rot disease.
Calathea Burle Marx does well with bright, indirect light. An eastern or northern-facing window would be ideal.
Any all-purpose fertilizer will work for Calathea Burle Marx. Indoor houseplant fertilizers fall into two groups: water-soluble, liquid quick release, and granular, slow-release fertilizers.
Prune these leaves when you notice them. Cut the leaf, with clean, sharp scissors, at the base where it connects to the main stalk.
Temperature: Room temperatures that average 65-75ºF (18-24ºC) and no lower than 60ºF (15ºC). Avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes.
